I am also Dave Walker

I'm away in Cambridge with Collective on a mission this week, so internet access is limited to the few occasions when I'm in a host household with Wi-Fi!

A few updates to the Dave Walker / SSG situation, though if you're already following it this is probably old news to you.

  • I meant to add MadPriest to my list of useful sites on this matter. Check out this page for the original Dave Walker posts (now circulating round the web) and this page for a practical way of showing support for Dave. This suggests emailing Mark Brewer, the man behind SSG, at his publicly available email address with the message "I am also Dave Walker".
  • Inevitably, SPCK/SSG: News, Notes & Info has attracted the attention of Mark Brewer, and received the standard 'cease and desist' notice. The site has full details.
  • Rev Sam has compiled a useful list of links that give a bit more background to the situation.

I shall be home soon...

UPDATE: 2 August 2008

Matt Wardman has done an excellent job of compiling all 75 of Dave Walker's original blog posts into a PDF document which includes an introduction. I have saved a copy here, to give it a bit more web exposure, but encourage you to continue to check out Matt's blog for the latest news.

Dave Walker solidarity post

Got back from a few days in Wales (no internet!) and started reading blogs again. Crumbs!! I can't believe what's been going on with Dave Walker and his cartoonchurch blog regarding the SPCK saga.

In brief, the SPCK bookshop chain was taken over by an American organisation, The Society of Stephen the Great (SSG) in 2006 and Dave has been posting about the way things have developed (rather a sorry story), taking a factual approach based on information that is publicly available. Then, on the morning of 22nd July he received a 'cease and desist' notice from SSG instructing him to delete all 75 posts relating to SPCK/SSG or face legal action. Whether such legal action would have stood a chance is a moot point; the threat of legal action as a way of seeking to silence discussion is not acceptable. However, understandably, Dave complied.

For more information see the following:

  • Matt Wardman has extensive coverage of the situation and his site acts as something of a centre for news and resources. Check out The Wardman Wire regularly.
  • David Keen has a very readable resume of what's happened so far including some very useful links. He's done several posts as things have developed so you may need to scroll down a bit.
  • USDAW, the union of shop workers has submitted a number of employment tribunal claims against the Brewers, owners of the SPCK shops.

And finally, friend and blogger Rev Sam has managed to copy many of Dave's original posts on this subject from the Google cache before they got overwritten. Sam has posted them on his own blog here, and has in turn been served with a 'cease and desist' notice himself, but has chosen to ignore it! Knowing Sam, I'm not really surprised!

I have copied Dave's posts from Sam's blog and reposted them here as a separate page. Sam suggests that other bloggers do the same. If enough people do this, Mark Brewer will have an impossible job keeping up with the truth as it leaps from blog to blog, from web site to web site, even if some of these are taken down under legal threat.

Note: If this post, and my related page with Dave's original posts, disappears, I'll leave you to read between the lines and work out why...!

This from ASBO Jesus - spot on, as usual...

Youth work and social media: boundaries

Jon Jolly has posted here about the issue of how we set boundaries in our online interactions with young people, citing a forum discussion he kicked off at UK Youth Online.

Here are a few thoughts from our experience, which may have turned into a bit of a ramble, but here goes anyway.

Within CYO our approach is to attempt to replicate the boundaries that we set by, for example, not giving our personal mobile numbers. In practice this means using work email addresses rather than personal ones. When it comes to social networking we do not admit young people (under 18's) that we work with as friends on e.g. FaceBook. Although it hasn't come to it yet, if we felt the need to set up a social networking space, we'd do it in our professional rather than personal capacity. A social networking space in a youth work context will naturally appeal to the same good practice guidelines about how much you share with young people to preserve professional boundaries. So, what photos you post (if any?), what you say in messaging, how much info you add to your profile, how often you update it or are available for IM chat. The guidelines we follow in other aspects of professional youth work practice convert fairly easily to this kind of Social Networking as long as it represents our professional persona.

Most IM clients allow you to save the message log and if you're using instant messaging with young people I would suggest it's good practice to save conversations; just as one would log phone calls, make a record of texts sent / received and save emails.

Collective, the girl band that work in partnership with us, have set up a MySpace page to allow a level of social networking with young people they meet. In their case it's a bit easier and less 'personal' in that they always present themselves as a band and never as individuals, so when replying to young people's emails they sign off as 'Collective' rather than as the person writing the email. If you're the only or main youth worker then obviously this isn't an option - you've got to sign off as yourself!

As above, none of us, including the members of Collective, accept friend requests from young people. However, it's a feature of the internet that if they want to, anyone can find you. We had a very persistent young person who managed to follow a long and ingenious trail to find out personal details about one of Collective.  I would therefore advise anyone, whether working with young people or not, to be circumspect about what they post and where, youth workers especially.

We need to exercise care in what we post - this obviously includes things like blogs and Flickr accounts. There's a whole load of photos I haven't posted to my Flickr account, some for artistic reasons (!) and some because they include people and I want to retain absolute control over how / if I use them, who sees them and in which context. You don't have to post everything; know yourself and be aware of your motives, just as you would be in your work with young people. And be very careful about what gets uploaded to YouTube!

I blog with clear reference to my employer, CYO, and use my work email address, so although it's my personal blog I need to post with regard to the way what I say will reflect on CYO. Anyone can read it, including my Trustees and young people so I seek to post in a way that would not cause problems if one of the young people we work with came by for a look. This means no names of young people and often insufficient identifying information (e.g. name of school) to ensure that if you didn't know the situation already you wouldn't be able to derive missing information.

Any major flaws, or advice you'd add? You're welcome to comment here, but you could also pop over to Jon's blog or the UK Youth Online forum.

Jesus and the dinosaurs

Jesus dinosaur Thanks to Dan Kimball for posting this.

We laughed. We nearly cried. We printed it out and stuck it on the wall.

I'm really not sure what to make of it. I think it could be subtitled, "where fundamentalism meets paleontology". But I'm not really sure.

Dan wonders whether this was truly from a Christian children's colouring book. I hope not...
I'm still confused...

Judge issues arrest warrant for Darth Vader

This article caused much mirth in the CYO office today, especially;

District Judge Andrew Shaw ordered police to hunt down the miscreant, and concluded: "I hope the force will soon be with him."

Do your people have a stake in the outcome?

A pearl of wisdom from Phil Cooke:

The people who complain the most, are the people who have no stake in the outcome.

True in so many areas, including youth work.

MacBook sleuth

When a woman in Santa Cruz had her Macbook stolen she enlisted the help of a friend who had a .mac account and a user account on her computer. Using Mac OS X Leopard’s “Back to My Mac” screen sharing feature he has been able to track and identify the thief including taking photos of him using the built in Photo Booth camera. The Police are now on the trail of the thief with a warrant...

Sharing the good stuff - links for today

I'm not sure my mind is in the best shape for blogging deep thoughts at the moment (see below), but I have been stirred and challenged by a few other bloggers recently, so here's the good stuff.

I'm not "so in love" with you

A few days ago I appreciated this from Matt Stone, citing a post by John Stackhouse picking up on the ongoing debate about expressions of love in worship songs. John's contribution is helpful for it's linguistic, cultural and theological perspectives.

Christian by nature?
Alan Hirsch has a fascinating exploration of the idea that people are, by nature, Christian, drawing on the thoughts of Leo Tolstoy and CS Lewis. I think I'd have some reservations about this being entirely valid because of the inherently Christian cultures and worldviews that Tolstoy and Lewis grew up in. But I confess to wondering similar thoughts when chatting to young people about life issues and God and finding within them a resonance with the Christian world view and often a warmness towards the idea of Christianity.

(Not) getting things done
I've been struggling lately with too many things to do and too little clarity about how to get them done. A kind of motivational paralysis which seeks to rob me of any real progress on pretty much everything (including blogging). Like some kind of outside observer of my own condition I've been aware that as a result I feel tired, when I have done little that's tiring, and that the solution lies in working out the next small step for each project or activity and getting it done.
I've been aware of David Allen's Getting Things Done method but never quite got around to looking into it - the past has left me with a dim view of most personal organisation methods.
So I was surprised to read Fernando's post about how it has helped him to change his approach to, well, getting things done. He writes, "I’m finally starting to remember what “completion” feels like and that’s something I haven’t felt in a long time," which is all the encouragement I need to give this a serious look.
